What Is Grid Trading?
Grid trading is a quantitative trading strategy with a very simple concept: automatically executing "buy low, sell high" operations within a defined price range. You set a price ceiling and floor, and the system places multiple buy and sell orders evenly spaced throughout that range, forming a "grid." Every time the price touches a grid line, a trade is automatically executed.
Here is an example: BTC is oscillating between 60,000 and 70,000 USDT. You set up 10 grid lines. The system buys at 61,000 and sells at 62,000; buys at 62,000 and sells at 63,000 — and so on. As long as the price continues to fluctuate within this range, you continuously earn the spread between each grid level.
Grid trading is best suited for sideways (ranging) markets — when prices oscillate back and forth within a certain range. The Binance app has turned this strategy into a one-click tool that requires no programming or quantitative analysis knowledge.
Accessing the Grid Trading Feature
- Open the Binance app and tap "Trade" at the bottom
- Find "Strategy Trading" in the top tab bar
- Select "Grid Trading"
You will see two grid types:
- Spot Grid: Runs using Spot account funds — suitable for conservative investors
- Futures Grid: Runs using Futures account funds — supports leverage and short positions, higher risk
Beginners are recommended to start with the Spot Grid.
AI-Recommended Strategy: One-Tap Setup
If you are unsure how to configure the parameters, the Binance app offers an AI Strategy Recommendation feature — the easiest way to get started:
- Select a trading pair (e.g., BTC/USDT)
- Tap the "AI Strategy" button
- The system automatically recommends grid parameters based on recent market conditions
- It displays the recommended price range, number of grids, estimated annual yield, and more
- Enter the total amount of funds you want to commit
- Tap "Create"
AI recommendations are typically based on 7-day backtesting data and provide reasonably sensible parameters for users who do not want to spend time researching. Keep in mind, however, that historical data does not guarantee future performance.
Manual Parameter Configuration
If you want to configure the parameters yourself, switch to "Manual" mode. The core parameters you need to set are:
Price Range
- Lower bound: The minimum price of the grid. If the price drops below this value, the strategy stops buying
- Upper bound: The maximum price of the grid. If the price breaks above this value, the strategy stops selling
- Configuration tip: Reference recent support and resistance levels. Do not set the range too narrow
Number of Grids
- More grids means smaller profit per grid but more frequent trades
- Fewer grids means larger profit per grid but fewer trading opportunities
- Generally recommended: 30–100 grids
Arithmetic vs. Geometric
- Arithmetic grid: Equal price spacing between grid lines. Better suited for narrow-range oscillations
- Geometric grid: Equal percentage spacing between grid lines. Better suited for wide ranges, especially for coins with large price swings
- In most cases, the geometric grid performs better
Investment Amount
Enter the total amount of funds you want to allocate to this grid strategy. The system will automatically calculate how much is allocated to each grid.
Trigger Price (optional)
You can set a trigger price so the strategy only starts running when the market price reaches that level.
Take-Profit and Stop-Loss (optional but recommended)
- Take-profit price: When the price rises to a certain level, the strategy automatically ends and sells all holdings
- Stop-loss price: When the price falls to a certain level, the strategy automatically ends to limit losses
Example: Creating a Grid Strategy
Using a BTC/USDT Spot Grid as an example, with the current BTC price near 65,000 USDT:
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Trading pair | BTC/USDT |
| Type | Spot Grid |
| Lower bound | 58,000 USDT |
| Upper bound | 72,000 USDT |
| Number of grids | 50 |
| Mode | Geometric |
| Investment amount | 1,000 USDT |
| Stop-loss | 55,000 USDT |
After configuring, tap "Create". The system displays the estimated profit per grid and a parameter summary. After confirming, the strategy begins running immediately.
Viewing Grid Strategy Status
Once the strategy is running, you can check it on the "Strategy Trading" → "My Strategies" page:
- Running status: Running / Stopped
- Total profit: Includes grid profit and floating PNL
- Grid profit: Realized profit earned through buy-low/sell-high trades
- Floating PNL: Unrealized profit/loss on currently held positions
- Annualized yield: Annualized return based on current profits
- Match count: Number of buy/sell trades executed by the strategy
- Run duration: How long the strategy has been running
Tapping into the strategy details shows more granular information, including each individual trade record and the current state of all pending orders.
When Should You Stop a Grid Strategy?
The following situations call for manually stopping the grid strategy:
- Price breaks out of the range: If the price moves significantly above your upper bound or below your lower bound, the market is no longer ranging and continuing to run the strategy serves little purpose
- Market enters a trending phase: If BTC begins trending steadily upward or downward, the grid strategy may underperform simply holding or taking a short position
- Target profit reached: If you set a profit goal, take it when you reach it — do not get greedy
- Major fundamental change: Events such as significant regulatory actions or major exchange hacks
To stop the strategy: go to "My Strategies" → tap the relevant strategy → tap "Terminate". After termination, the system automatically cancels all unfilled pending orders, and you can choose whether to sell the held coins for USDT.
Futures Grid Overview
The Futures Grid adds several additional features on top of the Spot Grid:
- Short selling support: You can create grids in "Neutral," "Long," or "Short" directions
- Leverage support: You can use leverage to amplify returns (and simultaneously amplify risk)
- Bidirectional returns: A long-direction grid earns grid profit plus position gains when the price rises; a short-direction grid earns grid profit plus position gains when the price falls
The setup process for a Futures Grid is similar to a Spot Grid, with the addition of directional and leverage choices. Given the inherent risks of futures, it is recommended to gain experience with futures trading before trying the Futures Grid.
Grid Trading Pros and Cons
Advantages
- Automated operation: Once configured, no need to monitor the market — it trades 24/7 automatically
- Works in ranging markets: Earns returns even during sideways price action
- Reduces emotional influence: The machine executes the strategy strictly without being influenced by fear or greed
- Low barrier to entry: The Binance app's AI recommendation makes it accessible even for complete beginners
Disadvantages
- Poor in trending markets: In a strong uptrend, it underperforms simply holding; in a strong downtrend, it keeps buying into a falling asset
- Low capital efficiency: Capital is spread across all grid levels, limiting its utilization rate
- Transaction fee costs: Frequent trading accumulates significant fees over time
- Breakout risk: If the price falls below the lower bound, you end up holding large unrealized losses
My Personal Grid Trading Tips
After using Binance's grid trading feature for over a year, here are a few lessons I have learned:
- Choose high-volatility coins with a solid floor: BTC and ETH are the best candidates — volatile enough to be profitable, but unlikely to go to zero
- Do not put all your funds into a single grid: Spread across 2–3 different grid strategies
- Adjust parameters promptly: If market conditions change, stop the strategy when necessary and restart it when conditions are right
- Watch your fees: Enabling the BNB fee discount can significantly reduce trading costs
- Long-term operation is key: Grid trading is a slow-and-steady strategy — do not expect to get rich overnight
Grid trading is not a magic solution, but it is genuinely a useful tool — especially for users who do not want to watch the market all day but still want to capture some returns from sideways price action.
